 Overview

Sasol is seeking a highly experienced Underground Manager to lead mining operations, ensuring production targets, safety standards, and cost efficiencies are achieved within a complex underground coal mining environment.

 Purpose of the Role

To ensure production and cost targets are met while developing strong leadership and promoting a culture of safety excellence throughout underground operations.

 Key Responsibilities

 Engineering & Compliance

• Implement operational and engineering projects
• Ensure compliance with engineering standards and legislation
• Develop and enforce SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures)

 Production Management

• Manage production to meet volume and cost targets
• Optimize productivity and asset utilization
• Monitor key performance metrics (e.g., tons per shift, cost per ton)

 Maintenance & Asset Management

• Oversee maintenance strategies to reduce downtime
• Ensure optimal performance of underground equipment
• Manage total cost of ownership of assets

 Safety, Health & Environment (SHE)

• Drive zero harm and zero fatalities safety culture
• Ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations
• Monitor and improve safety performance metrics

 Financial & Budget Management

• Contribute to annual budget planning (capex, costs, production)
• Manage operational costs and ensure budget compliance
• Monitor financial performance and reporting

 Leadership & People Management

• Lead, train, and develop mining teams
• Manage performance, recruitment, and succession planning
• Improve employee engagement and productivity

 Operations & Strategy

• Manage contractors and supplier relationships
• Balance production and maintenance priorities
• Integrate new technologies into mining operations

 Minimum Requirements

• BEng / BSc Engineering / BTech in Mining Engineering
• Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency (Coal Mining)

 Experience

• Minimum 9+ years’ underground coal mining experience
• At least 3 years in a supervisory/management role
