 About the Role

Transnet is seeking a qualified Fire Officer to lead fire and emergency operations, ensuring the protection of life, property, and the environment. The role involves operational leadership, emergency response, and administrative responsibilities within fire and hazardous materials (Hazmat) services.

 Position Purpose

To lead a team in delivering effective fire and emergency services, ensure emergency preparedness, and manage all related operational and administrative duties.

 Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain operational readiness and respond to fire and hazmat incidents
  • Deploy and manage fire personnel and resources effectively
  • Coordinate emergency response to protect life, assets, and the environment
  • Conduct fire prevention inspections and safety compliance checks
  • Investigate fire incidents and determine causes
  • Manage fire equipment, stock, and maintenance records
  • Perform administrative duties (leave, reports, stock control, audits)
  • Conduct risk assessments and oversee contractor work
  • Supervise fire suppression systems and emergency alarms
  • Lead training initiatives for staff and emergency preparedness
  • Ensure compliance with safety legislation and standards

 Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Hazmat Response Technician (SAQA/IFSAC) accreditation
    OR
  • Higher Certificate in Fire Technology (NQF 5) + 4 years experience
    OR
  • Relevant Fire Science / Fire Officer qualification + 4 years experience
    OR
  • Minimum 7 years experience as a Fire Fighter (if no formal qualification)

 Additional Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License (minimum C1) with PrDP
  • Must be mentally and physically fit
