The NSFAS Bursary Scheme is a government-funded initiative providing fully subsidised higher education to eligible South African students. Managed by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme under the Department of Higher Education and Training, NSFAS aims to support students from poor and working-class families.
If you want to study at a public university or TVET college but cannot afford it — this bursary is for you.
What is NSFAS?
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme was established under the NSFAS Act (Act 56 of 1999) to provide financial assistance to disadvantaged students pursuing higher education in South Africa.
What the Bursary Covers
University Students
- Accommodation (based on actual university costs)
- Transport (up to 40km): R7,500 per year
- Living allowance: R15,000 per year
- Book allowance: R5,200 per year
- Personal care allowance: R2,900 per year
TVET College Students
- Accommodation:
- Urban: R24,000/year
- Peri-urban: R18,900/year
- Rural: R15,750/year
- Transport: up to R7,350/year
- Additional transport: R7,000/year
- Personal care allowance: R2,900/year

Who Qualifies for NSFAS?
Applicants must meet the following:
- South African citizens 🇿🇦
- Household income ≤ R350,000 per year
- Persons with disabilities: income ≤ R600,000
- SASSA grant recipients automatically qualify
- Students who started before 2018 (income ≤ R122,000)
Who Should NOT Apply
- Students who already completed a qualification
- Household income above R350,000
- Students already funded by NSFAS (automatically continued if eligible)
