Purpose of the Role
To participate in and drive Process Safety strategy implementation in alignment with the 1 Sasol SHE Excellence Approach (1S SHE EA).
The role focuses on evaluating process operations, leading risk assessments, strengthening Process Safety Management (PSM) systems, and ensuring compliance to prevent major hazard incidents.
Key Responsibilities
Process Safety & Risk Management
-
Facilitate Process Hazard Assessments (PHA) and ad hoc risk assessments
-
Conduct Pre-Start-Up Safety Reviews (PSSRs)
-
Participate in major incident investigations and root cause analysis
-
Evaluate previous risk studies and recommend improvements
-
Identify major hazard installations (MHI) risks and ensure compliance
Process Safety Management (PSM)
-
Develop and maintain plant-specific PSM procedures
-
Drive PSM rollout initiatives across operations
-
Provide technical guidance on PSM standards and regulatory compliance
-
Ensure PHA findings are embedded into operational processes
-
Conduct PSM audits and plant inspections
Technical & Modelling Expertise
-
Conduct consequence modelling and probability analysis
-
Utilize the FER-SI tool for fire, explosion, and toxic index calculations
-
Identify potential process or asset risks that may escalate into major incidents
-
Support preventative maintenance through PSCE identification
Compliance & Governance
-
Support regulatory permitting and Safety Case submissions
-
Assist with 3rd-party audits and insurance engineer reviews
-
Analyse regulations and ensure full compliance
-
Advise on land use and spatial planning considerations
Culture & Continuous Improvement

Participate in process safety culture transformation programmes

Provide assurance and oversight on safety performance
-
Act as standby support for PSM-related duties
Minimum Qualifications
✔ Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Chemical or Mechanical Engineering)
Experience Required
✔ 11+ years relevant experience in Process Safety Management within a high-risk industrial or petrochemical environment
