 Job Purpose

The Process Engineer I will form part of the Technical & Engineering Support Team for the Acrylic Acid & Esters (AAA) and Butanol (BuOH) plants.

Reporting to the Process Engineering Lead, this role supports production targets by:

  • Providing technical process engineering support

  • Identifying optimisation and improvement opportunities

  • Supporting shutdowns, inspections, commissioning, and plant integrity

Due to the operational nature of the plants, the role requires hands-on field support during shutdowns and inspections. Candidates must be physically fit and comfortable working in an industrial plant environment.

 Key Responsibilities

 Process Monitoring & Optimisation

  • Understand process design intent and monitor plant health

  • Identify constraints, performance gaps, and optimisation opportunities

  • Improve efficiency, energy usage, product quality, reliability, and safety

  • Translate loss accounting into structured improvement plans

 Operational & Technical Support

  • Provide troubleshooting and problem-solving across operating units

  • Conduct plant test runs, trials, and technical investigations

  • Support shutdown inspections and plant recommissioning

  • Assist with catalyst and chemical loading/unloading

  • Support start-up and commissioning activities

 Process Safety & Risk Management

  • Support Process Safety Management (PSM) initiatives

  • Define and manage Process Safety Information (PSI)

  • Identify and mitigate process safety threats

  • Ensure compliance with Management of Change (MOC) processes

  • Contribute to Volume Protection Plans (VPP)

  • Adhere to SHE strategy to achieve zero harm

 Engineering & Governance

  • Participate in design reviews (HAZOP, PFD, MFD reviews)

  • Develop and maintain operating envelope documentation

  • Provide input into operating and shutdown manuals

  • Support smaller Tier 4/5 process engineering projects

  • Ensure compliance with Sasol policies and statutory requirements

 Minimum Qualifications

✔ Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering
(BSc Eng. Chemical Engineering or BEng Chemical Engineering)

 Experience Required

✔ Minimum 3+ years relevant process engineering experience
✔ Experience in plant operations, process optimisation, or technical support
✔ Exposure to shutdowns, plant integrity inspections, and commissioning advantageous
