Job Overview
GIBB Mining, a subsidiary of the GIBB Group, is looking for an experienced Mining Site Supervisor – Shaft Sinking to oversee shaft sinking operations and mining construction activities.
The role is responsible for ensuring that all shaft sinking activities are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory and project standards, while maintaining quality control and project timelines.
Key Responsibilities
Safety & Compliance
-
Ensure compliance with Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) regulations.

Monitor safety protocols including gas detection, isolation procedures, and PPE compliance.

Participate in Visible Felt Leadership (VFL) safety inspections.

Participate in incident and accident investigations.
Site Supervision & Construction Management
-
Oversee shaft sinking operations and site construction activities.
-
Monitor contractor performance and ensure equipment is safe and fit for purpose.

Ensure contractors follow approved drawings and the latest revisions.

Monitor the schedule of work to ensure compliance with project timelines.
Quality Control
-
Implement and monitor the Quality Plan with hold points.

Ensure work complies with GIBB and Sasol standards and specifications.

Monitor progress and prepare site variance reports.
Shaft Sinking & Installation Oversight
-
Monitor shaft bunton and guide installation.
-
Inspect and record elevations of curb rings, bunton boxes, and station steelwork.
-
Monitor headgear erection and guide alignment.
-
Ensure proper installation of shaft bottom civil works and steel structures.
Equipment & Maintenance Monitoring

Monitor mechanical maintenance and statutory inspections of sinking winders and winches.

Oversee water handling during shaft sinking and equipping stages.
-
Ensure contractor cranes, lifting equipment, and rigging systems comply with safety requirements.
Project Coordination & Reporting

Attend construction, planning, and safety meetings.

Maintain and review daily progress diaries.
-
Report progress, safety issues, and project risks to the Shaft Package Manager or Construction Manager.
Commissioning & Project Handover

Assist with commissioning of shaft systems.

Conduct inspections for completed work and compile punch lists for remedial work.

Support final project handover and certification processes.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications

National Diploma in Mining Engineering
Experience
-
Minimum 5 years experience as a Mining Shiftboss or Mine Overseer (Underground)

Minimum 5 years shaft sinking and equipping experience

Knowledge of ISO standards and mining regulations
