Position Purpose

The Engineering Technician is responsible for the maintenance, installation, repair, and troubleshooting of radio telecommunications equipment used by Transnet. This includes microwave systems, trunked and open channel radio networks, base stations, mobile and handheld devices, telemeters, and marine radio systems (where applicable).

The role also involves leading a technical team to ensure reliable network performance across the assigned region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance on radio networks and equipment
  • Install, commission, and program new telecommunications systems
  • Conduct fault finding, repairs, and system restoration
  • Provide progress updates to the Technical Command Centre (TCC)
  • Supervise team members and ensure efficient maintenance delivery
  • Complete technical and administrative reports (MICA, faults, maintenance logs)
  • Implement safety procedures and risk management protocols
  • Coordinate training and development of team members
  • Maintain accurate site and equipment records

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

  • T3/S4 or National Diploma (Electrical Light Current)
  • Registered Engineering Technician with ECSA

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in telecommunications (radio)

Additional Requirements

  • Valid Code EB driver’s licence
  • C-Green certificate
  • First Aid (Level 2)
  • Fall Protection & Fall Arrest certification
